My
experience as an Instructor in the departments of Sculpture and Fiber and
Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago demonstrates my
interdisciplinary approach and dedication to working with students toward concurrent
conceptual and technical development. This past summer I also served as a
fabrication instructor and advisor for SAIC’s Low-Residency MFA program. I
possess a broad knowledge in sculptural techniques, art, design, and craft
history, and contemporary issues in the expansive field of sculpture.
My primary areas of expertise include mold making and
casting in a variety of materials including bronze, iron, and aluminum, pattern
drafting for sewing and fabrication in a range of sheet materials, steel and non-ferrous
metal fabrication, and site-responsive installation. I
have a comprehensive knowledge of analog and digital textile design and
construction, surface design and dyeing, hand and machine sewing, weaving and off-loom
construction.
Additional skills include technical
and observational drawing, analog and digital design and fabrication for
sculpture and textiles, functional fabrication in wood, and a conceptual and
resourceful approach to construction using non-traditional materials and
inventive methods of attachment.
In my
personal work I am invested in the material engagement of sculpture and fiber
methodologies, the discourse between design, craft, fine art, and artifact, and
issues of ecology and American identity. As an extension of my practice, I
co-founded The Visitor Center Artist Camp, a DIY Artist Residency in rural
Michigan committed to skill-sharing, sustainability, team design and building,
creative adventure and hands-on research in a near-wilderness setting.
